Life on earth began about 3.7 billion years ago, after the earth cooled down and oceans began to form. Microscopic single-celled life evolved first, and photosynthesis developed later to release oxygen that slowly changed the atmosphere. After that, complex multicellular life evolved, leading to more developed ecosystems like the ones we see today.
